Each year more than 20,000 Sandhill Cranes migrate through the wetlands of the San Luis Valley's Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, Monte Vista, Colorado. The Rocky Mountain population of the Greater Sand Hill Cranes spends more time in the San Luis Valley than at either of their wintering or breeding grounds. The peak springtime migration is mid-March.
